Envictus

I had almost forgot about the power of these words in this poem (my dad used to have me say it when I was little), but if these words were written across every persons heart...perhaps the rates of suicide would be less prevalent. Perhaps then, determination would be written on the faces of every child...

"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever God may be from my unconquerable soul.
Under the fell clutch of circumstance,
my head is bloody but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade, and yet,
the menace of the years finds, and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how straight the gate,
or how charged with punishment the scroll,
I am the MASTER of my fate,
the CAPTAIN of my soul."

Life at times has an uncanny way or teaching us multiple lessons. Whether they are presented in small or large packages, gifts or obstacles, remain unbowed and motivated in your pursuit. At times we all are impacted whether negatively or positively by something or someone. Turn everything into a lesson. Learn from it and grow.

My personal lesson for myself today: Don't let nobody tell you who or what you are. No matter if they are friend or foe. There is a difference from giving a healthy critique or constantly saying something negative. Do not let the negativity move you. Remain unbowed.

Dear Mr. Pazant

Sorry my fellow readers and bloggers...although this is a little late, it is still incredibly important that I do this. I would like to wish a Happy Fathers day to every single father out there who understands what it means to be a FATHER, including the awesome single mothers who play both roles. However, I would like to give a special tribute to my father, Mr. Alvin B. Pazant: an educator in every field of life.

(In the picture above, my father top left and Uncle Edward, bottom right.) This man in more ways than one has been an inspirational figure in my life. I believe I get my drive and determination from him in many ways. He has impacted my life profoundly. He will always be that one man in my life that I know I will always be able to depend on. Now why else would i blog about my father? I consider this man to be a visionary in music. Its because of him that I grew up around old time funk music. It is because of him that I learned to play the clarinet. Both my father and uncle, passionate about music started a band called "The Pazant Brothers and The Beaufort Express." They came out with songs such as "Cold Sweat", "Superfunk", "Loose and Juicy", "Skunk Juice". You can check out their discography and musch on The Pazant Brothers, google them.
From conducting orchestras to simply educating me on the simple values of life, this man, Alvin Pazant could never be replaced.

Peace & Funk,
Lolita

Presenting....EarthGang

Upon first hearing about EarthGang, I had never heard of their music. After doing some research on these men, I can say that I was more than presently surprised. When asking a few people about them, the common response was "They are DOPE!" After listening to some of their music, I can honestly say the same thing. These two young men from Atlanta, Georgia are definitely worth the blog post. Let's continue shall we?

EarthGang consists of two young men by the names of Johnny Venus and E. Hobbes who currently attend Hampton University. How did they form this awesome duo? In the words of J. Venus: "We went to the same high school and decided to create the Music Group EarthGang and under the shade tree out side of the school's complex. I think our styles contrastically compliment each other and our musical taste, which is all over the world from Duke Ellington to The Clash helps us stay well rounded. We're not your typical rap group or your "rap" group for that matter. We want our music to transcend genres, culture, and time. Alot of fellow artists we come into contact with can be very narrow sighted. Like their ambitions are to only take over the "rap" game or the U.S. We plan to effect the world not only through music but through film, art, literature; the whole nine." Not your typical "rap" group? Not in the least! Influenced by artists such as Prince, 3-6 Mafia, Queen, Wolfmother, UGK, Chicago, Gill Scott Heron, The Fugees and The Beatles (which are just to name a few), EarthGang brings the music world a refreshing and unique sound that I truly can say I am a witness to. When I first heard their song "EG Rock" I was happy to hear a different sound than the usual "Rap" flavor thats consistently being packaged and shown in the media everyday.

Why am I supporting EarthGang? The music industry is in dire need of talented and unique individuals with vision, and that is EarthGang. It is ashame when unique artists with a brave, new sound get swept under the rug for not conforming to the norms of the music industry. For these reasons I support EarthGang. They bring the music game the full package. Not to mention, I support the fellow goal oriented, African American man. There is probably alot more I could say, but I'm going to let their music speak for themselves. My personal fave..."Ms Evette" =]
